From the couple:

Our story began in October 2014 at University of California, Davis. We were both about to start the PhD program in Sociology and were attending a library orientation. We started talking after our group sessions the first day, which turned into a two-hour walk around campus. Several weeks later, after getting to know each other more through classes and after receiving approval from Sam’s two fluffy black cats, Wildy and Sluggers, we started dating. Two years later, after earning Master’s degrees, we both decided that the PhD program was not for us and moved to the San Francisco Bay Area. While we did not leave Davis with PhDs, we left with each other!

The Proposal:

On December 3, 2016, we arrived at the Clift Hotel, which is home to one of my favorite bars in San Francisco. After Sam finished getting ready for the night out, Connelly got down on one knee in the hotel room. We celebrated by getting drinks at the Redwood Room and having dinner at Hakkasan, which was actually where we ate for our first ever date night in the City. It was so nice to share this moment privately, just the two of us, doing things that we enjoy doing together.

Wedding Theme:

We wanted our wedding to be glamorous and romantic with a bit of vintage charm that was echoed in the flower arrangements and music played by the Cosmo Alleycats band. We were very excited for the Loews Regency Wedding Photos. Our wedding was a play on old Hollywood glam combined with a whimsical addition of a few homages to our two cats.

Wedding Styles:

The wedding dress search was definitely a long process, but I fell in love with the last dress that I tried on – an Allure beaded and embroidered silk mikado gown with an intricate illusion back and mermaid silhouette. I especially loved the drama of my beaded cathedral length veil for the ceremony!

Connelly wore a custom burgundy suit from Indochino with a pink and white paisley bow tie. He even had the lining of the suit embroidered with our wedding date!

Wedding Florals:

The flowers perfectly reflected the old Hollywood glam and vintage vibe with rich burgundy, pale pinks, and dark greenery. I especially loved the billowy feathers and foliage that were added to the ceremony pieces and table arrangements. The ceremony space on the 40th floor SkyDeck was kept minimal to truly focus on the stunning view of the San Francisco skyline and bay. This view was perfect for our Loews Regency Wedding Photos. We used clear Chiavari chairs to keep the look clean and modern, with large floral arrangements flanking the altar area to tie in to the vintage feel of our reception.

Ceremony and Reception:

Our processional and recessional song was “Dream a Little Dream of Me. Our reception was in the Embassy ballroom of the Loews Regency. We had a spotlight pattern with “Mr. & Mrs. Doan” that was on display during our first dance to “Summer Wind” by Michael Buble, performed by the Cosmo Alleycats. Our favors were put at the place settings – a cup with an illustration of “The Doan Family” which included our two cats, along with a small sampling of San Francisco’s Ghirardelli Chocolate.

Our Advice:

Hire a wedding coordinator! Our wedding day was completely stress-free and it was such a relief not having to handle all the behind-the-scenes set-up and coordination ourselves. Also, it’s so true when people say that the wedding day will be over in the blink of an eye. Be sure to stop and really soak everything in so you’ll have memories to last a
