From the couple:

We met in high school in pre-calculus class! We stayed friends throughout college and then started dating after we both graduated college and moved back to the bay area. So, we got engaged in Carmel, CA after a day of wine tasting and spending time at the beach with our dog! We went for a classic but rustic/outdoor look and chose colors that would compliment the natural beauty of the venue (with all of it’s greenery and trees). Simple yet classic was our vibe!

Style:

I’ve always loved the look of lace wedding dresses so I instantly fell in love with the lace on my dress! I loved all the detail on the straps and on the train. My shoes were vegan leather flats and were made by a designer in Israel! I was happy to wear flats, I was SO comfortable all day and, being 5’11”, I didn’t really feel I needed the extra height anyway! Tom chose a classic slim-fit suit that was custom-made by Suit Supply, a Dutch suit manufacturer. The navy suit looked so chic with the sage green tie!

Florals:

We wanted our florals to have more of a wild/natural look to match with the venue. We’ve never particularly cared for the look of perfectly round bouquets and overly-styled florals. We love the natural look and loved the incorporation of thistles, a nod to both Tom and my Scottish heritage! 🙂

Officiant:

One of our best friends, Anne, officiated our wedding. Anne made the ceremony so special by incorporating tidbits about each of us, how she knows the two of us and how she has seen us evolve as a couple. Tom and I are both pretty laid-back people who don’t take ourselves too seriously so, while many of our vows were very serious, others were cute and funny. Our flower girl dropped pom-poms that we’d made (vs. flower petals). The wedding party walked down the aisle to “Better Together” by Jack Johnson and I (Kim), walked down to one of my favorite songs of all time, “Into the Mystic” by Van Morrison. It makes me cry almost every time I hear it!!

Reception:

Our reception was also at the Piedmont Community Hall, in their gorgeous patio. We loved utilizing this beautiful outdoor area which was made complete with the extra touches like string lights (which were strung around the patio). Our tables were “California” themed (Big Sur, Yosemite, Alcatraz, etc.), since we are both proud CA natives! Our signature cocktail was a Kentucky Mule (we both inherited what we call the “bourbon gene” from our respective grandfathers).  They were SO delicious!

One very special addition to our reception was the special singing performance done by our good friend, Jonathan. Jonathan sang one of our favorite songs “Green Eyes” by Coldplay (a REAL tear-jerker, let me tell you), and I don’t think there was a dry-eye in the house. He did an amazing job and it was just so special! Tom and I had taken some dance lessons leading up to the wedding to prepare for our first dance. 🙂 We *think* it paid off and that we would have made our instructor proud during our first dance to “Everywhere” by Fleetwood Mac. I love that we’ll always be reminded of that experience and of our special day whenever we hear it! The rest of the night was spent tearing it up on the dance floor (shoutout to DJ Ersson! You’re the best!!).

Advice:

Our advice would be to try and do as many things as possible in advance. Once your family and friends start arriving in advance of the wedding, you’re going to want to have time to relax and spend time with them (vs. running around doing last minute things). There will always be SOME things left to do, but make it easier on yourself by taking care of as much as you can in advance. Also, make sure to eat breakfast, lunch and snacks on your wedding day…you’ll need it!! Finally, take time (during the wedding), to look around at all the family and friends who are there with you. The day moves SO FAST so you want to make sure you take those moments to soak it all in!
